Cast Iron Soul

A celebration of home cooking.

Opening Day- April 4th, 2025

Money ain’t rich / everybody sins / Nobody wins in a fight / Sometimes wrong is right – Eric Church

Opening Day of Major League Baseball has arrived. And whether you follow a major league, minor league, Little League, or your cousin’s beer league team, it means spring is back in session. It’s that time of year for white pants, allergy medicine, and birds chirping as the sun rises.

It’s also a great opportunity to make soup a few more times before the heat rises for summer. So enjoy one of my favorites, Magic Elixir White Bean Soup this month. Just like the spring season, it’s warm enough to be comfortable but won’t make you sweat. And it can help you recover after having to cut the grass for the first time this year. So go on, stock up on the Zyrtec this week, cause spring is back baby.

And hey – Let’s get supper on the table.

Commandment #1 – Challenge yourself.

I’m about a 3 out of 4 hit rate on new recipes. I will cook 3 meals that are balanced, taste great, and are received well. And then the next meal, I will overcook the meat, burn the vegetables, or take longer than planned while guests wander around the guacamole hungry for dinner.

But ultimately only by challenging yourself do you get better, regardless of success or failure. And that is why the first Cast Iron Commandment has nothing to do with cooking, but everything to do with learning and growing to become a great home chef. So go on, challenge yourself. And always have some frozen pizza as a backup.

Y’all be good. – Hendo
