One day you’ll find yourself sayin’ the things that he said
You’ll be walkin’ down the hallway, turnin’ off every light switch
When you twirl your kids in your arms
Before you know it, it won’t take too long
They’ll be runnin’ off makin’ a life just like you did

Lori McKenna, “People Get Old”

Good morning y’all. Give the father’s in your life a call this weekend, and send them the gift of a Cast Iron Soul Subscription. Subscription are free this weekend for all Dads, wanna be Dads, or anyone that has a Dad.

I’ve heard a story that my Dad and his brother grew up on BLT’s after working outside in the summertime North Carolina heat. My Poppe, his dad, was the best home cook I’ve ever had the pleasure of sitting at a table for. So when I make a BLT, yes I’m watching the temperature on the bread and listening for the right “crackle” of the bacon. I’m also thinking of my own family’s history, and how I’m thankful to carry on some part of their tradition to my own home.

The “Soul” part of this blog/love letter really has nothing to do with food. It’s how the cooking takes the soul to an old memory or feeling of belonging. Well-prepared food is a tribute to the past and traditions of those who prepared it, and the anchor of well prepared food is cast iron cookware.

So I’ll be making a BLT this weekend in remembrance of my Dad and his Dad, both of whom I miss a whole lot these days. I encourage you do to the same, and make a meal that gets Dad talking.

Enjoy the golf on Sunday, and try to avoid the rough. Let’s get supper on the table.

Y’all be good. – Hendo
