… Blame it all on my roots, I showed up in boots
And ruined your black tie affair
The last one to know, the last one to show
I was the last one you thought you’d see thereGarth Brooks, Friends in Low Places
Good morning y’all, enjoy the last few weeks before we hop on the holidays train. Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are coming quick.
Some people have said that Jesus’ greatest miracle was having 12 close friends in his 30s. While I think Lazarus would have something to say about that, the joke maintains that friendships, especially new friends, are hard to come by once you have graduated from college and ventured yourself forward.
The challenge of making new friends is that so much of relationships are around shared experiences. Ever think about how hard it is to talk about non-work topics with people at the office? The baseline of the relationship is dependent upon the shared experience of working and solving problems together. It is hard to break topics from that mold on a day to day, and even harder with individuals or couples you may see once a month who you want to be friends with.
So this month, create some new shared experiences and with new friends. Cook up some Chicken Tortilla Soup and tell them about this wacky online fella who blogs about cast iron skillets and country music. Before you know it, boom, there’s a new shared experience and you’ve got new friends in low places.
Crank up the Garth. Y’all be good. Let’s get supper on the table.
